16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, Nov 25th-Dec 16th 2024

The annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25Tth to December 10th on Human Rights Day. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the negative impact that violence and abuse have on women and children and to rid society of abuse permanently.

The Theme for the 2024 campaign is “Every 10 Minutes, a woman is killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women”. The Theme emphasizes the urgent need for collective action to combat gender-based violence, highlighting the alarming statistic that a woman is killed every ten minutes globally.

In Kenya, the recent rise of attacks and killings on women has raised concerns among Human rights activists who are now calling on the government to take immediate and decisive action, urging officials to declare the rising tide of violence against women a national disaster, as it continues to claim lives at an alarming rate. The issue has now become a national conversation, with calls for both legal reforms and societal changes to address the root causes of gender-based violence.

Role of Men and Boys in Combating Gender- Based Violence (GBV)

Men and boys are critical allies in the fight against gender-based violence, and their active participation during the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV 2024 can help drive meaningful change. By challenging harmful norms and promoting gender equality, they can help build a safer, more inclusive society.

Dan Shieshie Foundation actively advocates against gender-based violence and equity in gender roles. The organization has a tollfree number 1198 to report gender-based violence cases.

During the 16 days of Activism against gender-based violence the key messages the organization is highlighting are.

  • "Ending GBV is everyone’s responsibility." Men and boys must actively challenge behaviors that sustain violence.
  • "Respect and equality are strengths, not weaknesses." Healthy relationships thrive on mutual respect.
  • "Speak up, even when it’s uncomfortable." Silence enables violence; taking a stand inspires change.
